DEEP COVERS: FINALLY BACK IN STOCK

Young Holt Unlimited/Erma Franklin/Jackie Wilson: Light My Fire

Eddy Senay: Ain't No Sunshine
Both available on Deep Covers (F.O.S.S.I.L., 2003)

Ever since I started this site, I've been plugging Deep Covers, a mix-CD/comp I put together in 2003 that highlights soul, funk, jazz and Latin covers of other songs: some well-known, others obscure. Of course, what I forgot was that TurntableLab.Com ran out of copies months ago.

I finally got off my rear and had more copies made and wanted to offer them to the Soul Sides massive first. here are the complete liner notes to the CD.

Just to give you an idea of what you'll be getting, I've included two snippets from the 21 songs included.

The included version of "Light My Fire" is actually three different songs-in-one. From best I can tell, Young Holt Unlimited covered the Doors' hit as an instrumental and then Erma Franklin and Jackie Wilson both used that backing track for their own vocal versions. As you can hear all three are completely identical musically speaking though I have to give a slight nod to Franklin for being the better vocalist in this pairing over Wilson.

Finding the right cover to include for Bill Withers' "AIN'T NO SUNSHINE" was another tough one, since there are so many great ones. I decided to go with Eddy Senay's because it's just so damn cool it's like a perfect sunset anthem while sipping on a mojito somewhere.

I wasn't sure how much interest there'd be for the CD from folks like you so I only had about 20 made, just for my readership. If you'd like a copy, email me and I'll send you ordering info. If you have a site that links to Soul Sides, make sure you mention that too.

My best,

O.W.
